Winning was always very important to me.
Math tests, Rugby, girls...I even wanted my apple crumble in cooking class
to be best of the bunch. But, talent and desire to win will only
take you so far, and ultimately I lacked any sense of direction to achieve
something specific. In the small Australian country town I grew up
in, I was still able to win more than I lost.
At seventeen, however, I learned that the
burning desire within me to win |
seemed more than just an apt metaphor.
I learned I was able to manifest and project flame, which while a nice
party trick around New Year and loads of colorful funn seemed a little…pointless
at the time. There was no one to compete with, no game and most of
all nothing to win.
Ultimately the powers faded as did that
burning desire. I grew up, worked and dragged myself into the mundane
routine that life so readily shoves down our throats. It would be
years before I’d figure it all out.
When the Rikti war struck, that juvenile
sting struck back at me. There was no way we were going to lose to
them. We couldn’t. I felt the fires of passion in me again
and decided it was time to do something, time to rise to the challenge.
So caught up in a wave of impetuous action, before I knew it I found myself
in Paragon city, the City of Heroes.
I don’t know if I want to be a hero, but
I do know I want to win. I just haven’t figured out what the game
is yet.
